SOMERVILLE
Marsha Somerville [marsha721@earthlink.net] May 2008
I am looking
for information about Dudley Somerville and Emily Somerville.
They are in the 1910 Census in Tonkawa, Kay Co. In the 1920 Census
Dudley is listed as a widow...Emily died sometime between 1910-1920
but I have no exact date, no obit and no burial info although I have
been
told she could be buried at IOOF in Blackwell. I cannot locate Dudley
in
the 1930 Census so I believe he died between 1920-1930. Again, I have
no exact date, no obit and no burial info except the info that he also
is
buried at IOOF in Blackwell.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. I am hoping to
locate the
headstones so I can get pictures someday. Thank you so much for your
time.
Marsha Somerville
Marsha,
I found your 2 people both buried in the Blackwell, Kay Co. Cemetery.
Dudley Sommerville May 2 1849 d. Sept 1921 w. Emily Jane
Emily Jane Sommerville Jan 8 1860 d. May 10 1919
Last name spelling was like above from the Kay Co. Cemetery Book
There were 2 more listed spelled Somerville. Just in case they might
be yours.

Corresponding Sec.
Shirley, you are wonderful! I have been unable to pinpoint this information
for a long time.
And Douglas and Howard belong to me, too :) Thank you for your time.
I hope I'm not pushing my luck, but could I ask about another person
in Kay Co?
It's my great great grandmother. Her name was Amelia Catherine Rankin.
Sometimes
I've seen the Amelia first, other times the Catherine. Anyway, I know
she died in
Ponca City but I am guessing at the date. I think around 1920-26. I
believe she is
buried at IOOF in Ponca City. I have an obit but there is no date. Thank
you so much
for the help you have given me. I am 2000 miles away and you all have
been a
blessing!
Marsha
Picture of tombstone was sent
Marsha,
Thought you'd enjoy that. Is quite a large stone. You did click on the
picture to enlarge it so you could read the writing on it, didn't you?
Amelia Catherine Rankin May 20 1834 Sep 21 1926
and yes, she is buried in the Ponca City IOOF cem. ( Kay Co)
There are several other Rankins buried there also in case they might
be yours.
Shirley
Marsha,
Yes, we would like to have her obit & will put it on the web page.
I couldn't seem to find Benjamin Rankin anywhere. Sorry.
The other Rankins are listed below
Plesant T. Rankin 2 Apr 1854 17 Nov 1914 w. Esther
Esther A. Rankin 9 Mar 1865 30 Apr 1945 h. Plesant
Ferril W. Rankin 22 Dec 1898 13 Mar 1907 son of P.T & E.A. Rankin
Sinnet Jones Rankin 15 Feb 1909 8 Apr. 1926 Buddy
Don't know what the Buddy stands for but is listed under inscriptions,
so I think that means it's engraved on the stone.
All of these Rankins are buried in Blk A Lot 19 Space 1-2-3-4 in the
Prairie Chapel Cemetery east of Blackwell.
-----------------------------------------------------
The next 2 Rankins are buried in Prairie Chapel also but don't have
their born dates.
Cecil Pleasant Rankin d. 5-6-1989 Age 85
Maude Faye Rankin d. 1-16- 1992 Age 86
Clarence Sherman Rankin d. 5-6-1977 Age 85 He was buried in Whittier,
CA. Rose Hill Memorial
--------------------------------------------------------
Did not find Lenora Somerville either married or buried in this area.
The PGS has been recanvasing all the cemeteries in the area doing updates
& taking pics. Do have some on file & CD. Takes along time to
tromp the cemeteries :)
Be sure & send the obit you have & our webmaster will get it
put on for you. Need anything else just yell.
Shirley
Thanks Shirley. None of the other Rankins are mine, one exception but
I have
to look thru some of my papers to know for sure. I think Benjamin died
before
coming to OK.
I am enclosing the obit that I have for Amelia. Thanks for your help
and I will keep
in contact.

SILVER - OARD
Renee [cicely3@hotmail.com] Mar 2008
Hello,
I am hoping to find out if the Genealogical Society has any family files
or the like on the SILVER and OARD families. Specifically, I am seeking
the family of Joseph W. Silver (d. 4 March 1916), his children being:
Fay William Silver (d: ?),
Claud Silver (d: 29 June 1975),
Gertie M. [Silver] Oard (d. 6 March 1973), wife of Clarence A. Oard
(d. 11 March 1971)
All but Fay William Silver are buried at Braman Cemetery in Braman,
Kay County, as are additional family members. I am not sure when/where
Fay William died or where he is buried (he could be at Braman, but I
haven't been able to confirm that). He was born 18 Dec. 1885, and is
wife was Luella [Seeley] Audiss (Seeley being her maiden name, Audiss
her first married name). Their only child that I know of was Floyd R.
Silver (b. 14 July 1915, Kay County).
Ultimately, I would like to locate their obituaries and any other information
the Society may have about the Silver and Oard families. If it is preferred
that I sent an inquiry by snail mail, please let me know. (Also, I would
prefer my inquiry not be posted on the Society's website. Thanks.)
Thank you,
Renee
Renee,
I haven't been able to find out much for you.
I did find on a 1910 census from Kay Co. the following were listed in
the household.
Joseph W. Silver Age 52
Fay W. Silver 24
Claud O. 22
Girdie M. 18
Ruby E. Plesant 13
I found on the Social Security Death List that Floyd R. Silver died
1983 in San Diego, CA.
You didn't mention any Oard names but there are some in the Blackwell
Cem.
Email is fine to use. Need any more let me know.
Shirley
Hi Shirley,
Thanks for the email. You mentioned some Oards are buried at Blackwell
Cemetery... do you happen to have a list of them?
That Silver family from the 1910 Census is the one I'm seeking. So
far I have located where the father Joseph, and children Claud and Gertie
are buried, but I haven't been able to locate Fay William Silver or
his mother (Joseph's wife; first name unknown).
Are there any cemeteries in Lowe Township? I know the family lived for
many years.
Thanks,
Renee
Hi Renee
Don't know if you have this info or not but here tis anyway
Claud Silver Jan 4 1888 Jun 29 1975 w. Ethel ch. Leland C.
Ethel Silver Feb 8 1887 Oct 3 1964 h. Claud
I also found that their son Leland C. is deceased also.
Claude & Ethel are buried in the Braman Cemetery
Am waiting for a call to find out about Fay William Silver & his
father Joseph & wife. The person I talked to thought there was a
possiblility they could be buried in the South Haven Cemetery, which
is just across the border into Ks. Will wait to see what I can find
out about them.
Buried in the Blackwell Cemetery
Orvie C. Oard 1860-1928 w. Lucy
Lucy Oard 1867-1949
James H. Oard Sep 16 1896 Feb 24 1917 Pvt. US Army WW I
Daisy M. Oard 1903-1935
There are 2 cem. in Braman--- Braman Cem is east of town, Triumph Cem.
is W. of Braman. That one also could be the one Fay W. is buried in.
Thats all I have for now.

SHARON/SHEERN
Sheri Fenley [sherilantzy@gmail.comm] Mar 2008
Hello,
I am looking for a death date, or an obit or a cemetery records for
my 3rd great grandfather JAMES SHARON/SHEERN who was born 30 November
1832 in Illinois. Surviving him would have been his widow Mary, a son
Ernest F. Sheern/Sharon and a daughter Mary Elizabeth and his first
wife Ann Emily Leseure who died in 1892.
I have located him in the 1900 Kay County Census living in Lowe Township.
I located a plat map and sent for land records and have been able to
narrow down his death between 1900 and 1904. In 1904 the application
he made for homestead was granted a patent to his widow Mary Sharon.
(Homestead Certificate #6217, Application #9357 made at the land office
in Guthrie, OK) The description of the land is: The North Half of the
Northeast Quarter of Section 34 in Township 29 North of Range 1 West
of the Indian Meridian containing 80 acres. James had a brother, John
Philip Sharon who owned land right next to him but did not live on it.
Thank you,
Sheri Fenley
Boy, Sheri, I am having a difficult time finding
your people. At this time I can not find James buried in any of the
Braman Cemeteries (which Braman is in Lowe Township). I live in Blackwell,
& Braman is about 9 m. N of us. Which I know the area well.
Due to your land records information, I know the exact area of the farm
you mentioned.
And I have the Kay Co. Cem. Inscription Book to check, also, but do
not find him buried in Braman nor any of the surrounding area close
to here. I will keep checking for you, so may take some time.
And without an exact death date I can't find an obit for you either.
I did find James & his family on the 1880 census (which I'm sure
you've already checked) living in Ladore, Neosho, KS. Then found his
son Ernest, (with his wife & family) on 1910 census living in Barton,
MO. Should you not have all that info. let me know & I can give
you that or you can check it out yourself.
Let me know if you find out any other info that could possibly help
me.
Shirley
Hello Shirley,
I appreciate your help so much. My Sheern/Sharon Line has been extremely
challenging for me. I have had to get very creative when searching for
records. Maybe you could answer my question about the land.
In 1904 Mary Sharon, Widow of James Sharon, is granted a patent for
the land James had homesteaded. I have a copy of the patent granted
to Mary. I don't have the original homestead application but I have
the homestead certificate number and the application number. Here is
the scenario:
James files the application for homestead and then dies between 1900
and 1904. When he died wouldn't the homestead thing have to go through
probate in order for the patent to be awarded to Mary Sharon, Widow
of James Shearn? James filed the homestead papers before he married
Mary. I am almost certain of this.
Do you know which government office in Kay County would have the probate
files for James Sheern who dies 1900-1904?
One more thing. Mary Sheern/Sharon dies around 1932 in Kay County do
your indexes list her in any area cemetery? Her full name was Mary E.
Malloy Sheern/Sharon? Sheri
Hi Sheri,
I guess I've not had this much trouble trying to find someone :)
Since you did give me Mary's death date, I might be able to find her
info at the funeral home here in Blackwell, which more than likely took
care of her funeral. The records I have on hand start at 1934. So will
have to go to the funeral home to check on their farther back dates.
Our Kay Co. courthouse is in Newkirk, where I think the land records
for this area would be kept. Here is the address you can write to
Kay Co.Courthouse
c/o County Clerk-Tammie Reese
Box 450
Newkirk, OK. 74647
Check with you later if I find out anything new.

Scott Musil [edison@hamilton.net] March 2007
I was wondering if you have access to microfilm for
newspapers from Nardin, OK. I am looking for an obit for:
Jess H. Searl
d. April 13, 1918 in Numa, OK (buried in Nardin)
I see there was a Nardin paper at that time. I have had people search
in Tonkawa and Blackwell, but have found nothing. The OK Historical
Society does research, but as I live out of state, it looks like it
costs over $20, which I think is a little pricy for 1 obituary! Thanks
for your time.

SIMS - SOULSBY
Tom Soulsby [soulsby@charter.net] January 2007
I am trying to find some information about my mother,
Ruth E. Sims, who graduated from the Ponca City School of Nursing
in the early 1930's. She married my father, George T. Soulsby, at
the Charles B. Handley home in the early 30's where she had been living
for sometime, I understand that her parents died when she was very
young...and that is where I hit the wall.
I have a newspaper article from the Ponca City News but there is no
date on the wedding article. The article even describes the cake from
the Jens-Marie hotel and the music played on WBBZ (Where I was employed
in the early 1960's).
Mom was related to the Jack and Hattie Mertz, I believe through Hattie
Mertz. She was a very close friend of Francis and Lucille Murray of
Ponca City.
If there is any source of information available I would greatly appreciate
it if you could forward the information or point me in some direction
to research the information.
Thank you in advance!
Right now all I have is the Application date
Nov 14, 1933, But I will get a copy for you.
I'm pretty sure that in the 1930 census she is living in Blackwell
on West College street with 4 other people that work at the hospital
with her. [registered nurses and 1 office clerk]I'll attach a copy
and you can see what you think.
I believe I also found the Charles Handley Family living on 4th street,
Ponca City 1920 & 1930, Wife Clara and daughters Beth & Charlene.
Charles owns a butcher shop.
I also found a Howard & Hattie Mertz in 1930 Ponca City. He is
a Automotive Engineer at the refinery.
These may or may not be the ones you spoke of in your email. If we
can connect them, I will be more then happy to give you copies of
these census records also.
I wish I had more to share. I know I will at least find the marriage
license and the newspaper article in Ponca and hopefully I will find
more.
Was your father's parents George S & Tennie A? Do you know if
they lived in Pawnee, OK?? If so I may have found them also.
The Handley's were butchers, Jack worked for Conoco
for years, their sons own Mertz brothers Iron works in Ponca City,
they were Don and Forest Mertz, Forest is still alive, Jack and Hattie
built a house very close to the Alan Muchmore home.
My dads parents were indeed George S and Tennie T Soulsby and they
lived in Pawnee, which is where I was born.
Thanks for all you have done, will look forward to what else you can
dig up.
The Marriage license for George
Soulsby and Ruth Sims. Dated Nov 15, 1933
It shows Ruth's father as Joe Sims and George's father as George Soulsby.
The Newspaper clipping was in the Ponca City News Nov 16, 1933
I found the Obits for Hattie and Jack Mertz and also for Charles and
Clara Hadley.
On ancestry.com there are:
1920-1930 census records for the Hadleys in Ponca City, OK
1930 census records for the Mertz in Ponca City, OK
1910-1920-1930 Census records for George Soulsby in Pawnee, OK
WWI draft Card for George Soulsby and a Joseph Soulsby
WWII Enlistment registration for Raymond Soulsby
1920 Census record for Joseph C Sims with a daughter Ruth E [Joseph
was a editor of a newspaper I presume at Medicine Lodge, Ks] but I
could not find this family in the 1930 census, so it might be worth
checking into.
I will be happy to send you these census copies if you would like.
There are several newspaper articles from Pawnee Co Newspapers that
are located at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/pawnee190919.html
http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/pawnee1920.html
http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/pawneebus.txt
http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/pawnee1919.html
http://www.rootsweb.com/~okbits/pawnee193342.html
Thank you, thank you, the information was a great way to begin the
new year.
We would like to get copies of the census you mentioned. As I said
before, if there is any out of pocket expense, we will gladly reimburse
you or whoever you direct us to compensate.
Thank you again, on behalf of all the family. While I was prowling
around in the family papers I ran across an obit for a 2 month sibling
of my dad. We have found the burial plot for her in the Highland Cemetary
in Pawnee and are going to place a head stone on her grave. I faintly
recalled my grandmother mentioning her birth one time, but there was
never another mention by anyone in the family. The family is buried
in the same cemetary but some distance from the infant. It must have
been very painful for my grandparents to never say a word about her.
We all have our secrets!

SOULIGNY
Connie Souligny [dcsouligny@coastalnow.net] Jan 2005
I am trying to research (as time allows) the Souligny family tree for
my husband, Earl D. Souligny III. As a novice in this area of research,
I am asking for guidance from your organization. Since his family helped
to found Ponca City, I imagine that you will have a lot of information
on the founding fathers. (He has family still living there.)
I expect to have to do all of the work over the internet, since we live
on the East Coast. I have tried the OK GenWeb site and can't seem to
find anything. Can you tell me how to get started? Any help will be
greatly appreciated. Connie Souligny
"This is my pioneer Story" written by
Mrs. J. P. Souligny in the book "The last Run"
I'm afraid she writes the story as if one should know her family, but
there is still some information to be gathered from it. In summary it
says: She was born June 18, 1866 in Kankakee, IL. traveled to Mt Union,
Pottawatomie Co, KS where her father homesteaded. Property still owned
by the oldest son of my sister-in-law. Grew up there and married J.
P Souligny in 1884. In 1890 went with her husband, oldest son, Ed P
to live in Arkansas City [KS] where V. N. was born. Made the land run
into OK.[1893] Then two years later Earl came to brighten our home.
Stayed on the claim for five years and then moved to Ponca City. Baptized
in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Kankakee, IL and always affiliated
with the Prebyterian Church of Ponca City. That is really all the family
info in the story. [There is quite a story]
There is also a room at the Historical Society
in Blackwell that is filled with Painting by Alice Souligny whose husband
is Earl. I don't believe there is any genealogical information.
"North Central Oklahoma - Rooted in the
Past - Growing in the Future" In the Ira and Geneva (Landers) Edwards
story,There is mention of a Dorothy May Edwards who married a Earl D
Souligny in June 1941, but divorced in 1958. They had 2 children, Earl
Douglass and Annabelle Louise and 4 grand children, Laurie Powell, Elizabeth,
Ruth and Ben Souligny. This article says that the Souligny family is
an old pioneer family. So there is probably more info that could be
gathered, if one spent some time researching.
There are Souligney records listed
in each of the following sources:
Kay County Marriage Application
Database
Trout Funeral Home Records
Grace Memorial Chapel
Ponca City IOOF Cemetery Mausoleum Records
Book of obits compiled by Loyd Bishop 1893 – 1908
