"Rivalry between the two towns was intense. Outsiders stated that it was like taking his life in his hands for a Cross man to visit Ponca City, and vice versa. There were many fist fights and sometimes free-for-alls when bodies of the citizenry got together. It is recorded that when the Perry baseball team played the Cross team on July 4, 1894, a group went from Ponca City to cheer for the Perry team. A general fight resulted, during which it appeared that those from Ponca City would be annihilated."
