The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located
in Tonkawa Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been
made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following
maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources
include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the
Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents
of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County
Newspapers.
Guiley/Geily [See Alert]
Discontinued February 13, 1902 effective February 28, 1902 with mail to
Eddy.
Richland
A Post Office was established May 25, 1894 with Mrs. Mary J Breedlove
as postmaster. September 10, 1894 the name was changed to Guiley.
Smackover
Located south of Tonkawa by the Salt Fork River. A oil boom town that
reportedly existed from February to June in 1923.
*Tonkawa
A Post Office was established March 9, 1894 with Eli V Blake as postmaster.
Named for the Tonkawa Indians. W W Gregory and Eli V Blake took the land
in the run where the original town is located. Six months after the run
they applied to the government for permission to “prove up”
the land and establish a townsite. A Townsite Company was formed and a
drawing was held at Arkansas City, Kansas. According to the county records
Tonkawa’s incorporation date was January 12, 1895, population 1040.
In 1921 the population of over 2500. Tonkawa had it’s own water
and power plant, 3 grain elevators, garages, hardware store, furniture
store, grocery, drug and general merchandise stores, blacksmith shop,
meat market, vulcanizing shop, newspaper, 3 banks, hotels, restaurants,
jewelry store, barber shop, lumber yard, bakery, harness shop, millinery
store, 7 churches and the University Preparatory School & State Business

Tyner
Consisted of a grain elevator [3 mi S & ½ mi W of Blackwell]
Located on a 1914 map. GNIS Site L-364420 LO-0971732W
Schools once located in the township were Center-67, Enterprise-75*,
Richland-66, Sunnyside-76*, Tonkawa-87 and Union-61*.
