*Autwine
A Post Office was established March 5, 1903 with William H Osborn as Postmaster. Located on the Santa Fe railroad line between Blackwell and Ponca City in Round Grove Township. Platted June 17, 1899 by W A Bradford, originally named Virginia City. A mile and a quarter south, a Mr. Pierce was successful in locating a Post office on his homestead which he called Pierceton. To add to the confusion the Santa Fe Railroad company called its Virginia City depot “Arta”. To this the townspeople said “enough”, called a town meeting and decided to name the town Antoine after a very popular and respected Ponca Indian. When the name was sent to Washington DC to be recorded, a error occurred and the name was recorded as Autwine. It was one of the leading cattle and hog shipping points. Businesses consisted of three grain elevators, three grocery stores, blacksmith shop, implement yard, general store, dry goods store, hardware store, bank, restaurant, drug store, post office, telegraph office and a Woodman Hall, Royal Neighbors Lodge and a Anti-Horse Thief Association office. About 1904, unable to keep up with the competition of Blackwell and Ponca City, the Bank & restaurant closed. In 1905 a fire swept thru nearly the whole business district, taking the life out of the town. GNIS site L364319N LO-0971348W
