The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located
in Owen Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been
made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following
maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources
include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the
Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents
of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County
Newspapers.
*Alcorn
Consisted of a elevator beside the Rock Island Railroad tracks. Named
after John Scott Alcorn, a vice-president of Marland Oil Co. Located southwest
of Tonkawa in Owen Township. GNIS Site L-363647N LO-0972335W
Carthage
A Post Office was established March 29, 1894 with Caroline E Hitt as postmaster,
discontinued May 20, 1895 with mail to Pierceton. Located southwest of
Cross.
Owen
A Post Office was established December 8, 1898 with Charles O Howe as
postmaster, discontinued August 31, 1901 with mail to Billings. It reopened
on September 6, 1901 operating for several more years, til August 31,
1911. Consisted of a grocery store, Post Office and a blacksmith shop.
Located 5 miles south of Tonkawa.
Polk
A Post Office was established April 4, 1894 with George W Littleton as
postmaster, Discontinued September 30, 1904. Effective October 15, 1904
mail to Tonkawa. Located in the southwest corner of the county where the
counties of P – O – L - & K met. Leo Miller gave land
for a sod school house, a general store and Post Office near there. In
the fall of 1894 the store was destroyed by a tornado, but in the spring
George Meece built a new store one mile east on the Maston Riley farm,
named it Polk and operated it for two years. Two miles north John Prather
had a general store and blacksmith shop and when Meece’s store closed,
Prather moved the post office to his store. Due to his health the post
office was closed in 1904.

*Three Sands
A oil field shanty town built in the early 1920’s on one of the
largest oil fields in Oklahoma. Situated on the Kay County line.
Schools once located in the township were Cottage Hill-79, Eagles Nest-82,
Home Valley-83, Leo-78 and Three Sands-81.
