The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located in Lowe Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County Newspapers.

*Braman
A Post Office was established April 11, 1898 with Jerry Crowley as postmaster. The town was started in 1898 when the first building was moved from Rock Falls and occupied by B C Payne who handled a general line of merchandise. Named for the railroad developer Dwight Braman. Located on the Tonkawa branch of the Santa Fe, it had a population of about 500 in 1921. A high school, 4 churches, 2 banks, 2 butcher shops, 3 general stores, 2 garages, tire & battery service station, 3 elevators, flour mill, poultry & produce house, hardware & implement store, lumber yard, hardware store, drug store and a number of other businesses. According to the county records Braman’s incorporation date was January 7, 1899, population 115. GNIS L-365525N LO-0972001W

Lillivale
A Post Office was established May 3, 1894 with James Lilly as postmaster, was discontinued April 13, 1903 with mail going to Braman. . A grocery store located on the James E Lilly homestead. North of Blackwell and straight west of Chilocco.

*Sumpter
A Post Office was established March 23, 1901 with John R Sumpter as postmaster, discontinued January 30, 1908. February 28, 1908 Located on the Santa Fe railroad line five miles north of Blackwell, the site was homesteaded by John R Sumpter in 1893, in 1901 a post office was established in the Sumpter home. There was a grocery store and elevator, a Grange hall [built in 1919]. A school was established near Bitter Creek, but had to move because of the floods. GNIS Site L-365301N LO-0971740W


Schools once located in the township were Braman-18, Friendship-24, Hunnewell-88 (1), Lillyvale-4, Lowe Center-17, Rock Falls-88 (1) and Sumpter-25.
