The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located in Kaw Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County Newspapers.

Kaw Agency
A Post Office was established June 28, 1880 with Thomas G Gilbert as postmaster, discontinued September 29, 1902. Effective October 15, 1902 mail to Kaw.

*Kaw City
A Post Office was established September 12, 1902 with William J Krebs as postmaster. According to the county records Kaw City’s incorporation date was May 19, 1903. Located on the Santa Fe railroad line in the Ox Bow Bend of the Arkansas River in the eastern part of the county. Businesses consisted of a bank, newspaper, 2 lumber yards, a mill, dry goods, grocery and feed stores, livery, restaurant, barber shop, harness shop, hardware store, saloon, meat market and a peanut stand. Also a post office, opera house, hotel, oil well supply companies, a canning company and several churches. It became an important shipping point. Named after the Kaw Indians, Williams M Jenkins bought the land from George M Murff and laid it out in town lots. The Kaw Dam and Reservoir covered the original town site and a new site was built. Lots in the new town went on sale at 1 pm May 25, 1968 and Initial sales went exclusively to the original Kaw City residents. GNIS Site L-364537N LO-0965000W

Uncas
Post Office was established June 21, 1895 with James Kenton as postmaster. Located on the Santa Fe railroad line in the east central part of the county near the Black Dog Crossing in the Ox Bow Bend of the Arkansas River. Named for a Mohegan Chief and platted in 1902. James Kenton and Gano Dawson operated a trading post there. The first school was built of native stone, located about a mile west of town. Businesses consisted of a general merchandise store, a hardware store, a candy kitchen, hat shop, barber shop, a contracting business and a blacksmith at the trading company. Others included a quarry, grain elevator and stockyards. 6 miles W of Kaw City. Post office June 21, 1895 to May 31, 1956. Named for the Mohegan Chief Incas, the word is from wonkus meaning Fox. According to the county records Uncas’ incorporation date was December 31, 1966, population 59. GNIS Site L-364744N LO-0965547W

Washunga
A Post Office was established November 15, 1902 with Henry S Davenport as postmaster. According to the county records Washunga’s incorporation date was December 23, 1923, population 315. Originally spelled Washungo, was changed to Washunga September 25, 1906. In later years this building was used as the Kaw Council House and was moved to a location above Washunga Bay, the only building to survive the construction of Kaw Dam. Businesses consisted of a bank, jail, livery, bakery, pool hall and grist mill. Also a butcher shop, blacksmith, trading post and service stations. GNIS Site L-364701N LO-0965017W


Schools once located in the township were Big Beaver-94, Cantwell-103, Kaw City-84, Little Beaver-105, Pleasant Ridge-97, Sweetwater-91 and Washunga-89.
