CROSS TOWNSHIP

The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located
in Cross Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been
made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following
maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources
include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the
Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents
of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County
Newspapers.
Cross
A Post Office was established October 4, 1893 with Ferdinand W Batchelder
postmaster and was discontinued June 8, 1903 with mail to Ponca City.
The Santa Fe Railroad promoted Cross, therefore it became the biggest
and most promising after the opening of the strip. It was less then a
mile from the current Ponca City.
According to the county records Cross’ incorporation date was December
20, 1893, population 238.
NEW PONCA PO
A Post Office was established January 12, 1894 with William S Thomas as
postmaster discontinued July 7, 1898 with the name changed to Ponca. Called
New Ponca because Ponca was the name of the Railroad station 4 miles south
at what is now called White Eagle. Incorporated On December 19, 1893.

A Post Office was established July 7, 1898 with Elbert W Hoyt as postmaster.
Formerly known as New Ponca, October 13, 1913 the name was changed to
Ponca City. Planned by Burton Seymour Barnes in July 1893 organizing the
Ponca Townsite Company. 1 m S of Cross. Two days after the opening, September
18, claims were bought up, Over 2300 certificates had been sold and a
drawing was held. In a Blackwell Times January 18, 1894 New article
“Ponca city is the next on the list to be congratulated. A post
office has been established under the name of New Ponca, with W S Thomas
as postmaster.”

Schools once located in the township were Cross-72, Fairview-57, Pleasant
View-56*, Ponca City-71 and Woodbine-70.
