The following list is of Post Office, Schools and place names located in Blackwell Township, Kay County, Oklahoma. Although every effort has been made to correctly identify and describe all listings on the following maps, errors can occur; sources can have conflicting information. Sources include Chronicles of Oklahoma [OHS], Rooted in the Past Growing for the Future [NCOH], Oklahoma Department of Transportation Maps, court documents of incorporation, Oklahoma Atlas’ and Gazetteers and Kay County Newspapers.

*Blackwell
A Post Office was established December 1, 1893 with Willard A Bowen Postmaster. From April 2, 1894 to February 4, 1895 the post office was operated under the name of Parker. The original town was built on land originally allocated to three minor Cherokees, George and Mary Palmer and Mike Hendricks. The first settlers arrived on September 16, 1893 and by January 1, 1900 the population was almost 2800. According to the 1921 Warden atlas the city constructed the Electric Park Pavilion [Housing the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society and a club room today] The town had five grade schools, a high school, one of the best Osteopathic Sanitariums in the southwest, 4 banks, zinc smelter, 4 oil refineries, bottle & glass factory, flour mill and elevator, brick company, woodworking plant and it’s own light & power company. An advertisement shows the Blackwell Hospital with Ambulance service. Located in Blackwell Township. Plat was filed by the Cherokee Strip Business Exchange & Protective Association December 27 1893. Members of the corporation were J B Lynn-Pres, F T Berkey-Sec and A J Blackwell-Individual. Town Named after Colonel AJ Blackwell. According to the county records Blackwell’s incorporation date was December 5, 1893, population 834. GNIS Site L-364816N LO-0971658W

Kay Center
A Post Office was established October 9, 1897 with Levi Horor as postmaster, discontinued June 1, 1898 with mail to Kildare. Located on a 1900 Map east of Blackwell


Schools once located in the township were Bethel (new)/New Bethel-39, Blackwell-45, Independence-38*, Prairie Home-60*, Star-44 and Weston-46.
