First, let me apoligize for just getting your letter today, from Feb. Sometimes it takes a long time for it to get to where it needs to go & filter down thru different people.

Anyway, yes, Albert G. Smart and Eveline Clampett took out a marriage application on Jan 3, 1920 Bk.12 Pg. 276 in Kay Co. Okla. She was not listed as Anna. But maybe her name could have been Anna Eveline & she just went by Anna.

I also found several Clamplett ladies that also married in Kay Co. before her, so if she had sisters that were a little older than her, maybe they are related. Will give you their first names & marr. appl. dates, Minnie B. Clampett 1908---Etta M. Clampett 1911--Ida Clampitt 1915---Lottie Clampitt 1922.

The last 2 (Ida & Lottie) last name is spelled a little different than the others, but sometimes spelling can be a problem when you think it can be spelled only one way.

Thank you, but no need to apologize. Life is full of stuff, you are volunteers...and I do appreciate your looking up my relatives in your records. Any other "Smart" people you run across may very well belong to me...but I am finding that the name is much more common than what I first thought.

I found them in Payne Co. Ok. (Paradise twnsp) on the 1930 census

I was encouraged to find the names of John and Lillie Staggs.  They were my grandparents, but I never met them.  For some reason they were estranged from my mother, Alice Faye Staggs, who was their youngest daughter.  I was told my mother had 3 sisters and I think 6 brothers.  Until I found this listing on the Internet I didn't know the dates of my grandparents births and deaths as I was 9 or 10 years old at the time.  Any information you have or can direct me to would be appreciated.  My mother told me she was born in Milfay, Oklahoma and went to school in Skeede, Oklahoma.  I visited that community in 1993 and was delighted to find the statue of the Osage Chief still standing.  This must be Chief Baconrind.  I would be happy to share any information that I have which might be helpful and to get any information you may have.

You mentioned your mother Alice but no dates.  Are you saying she might be buried here in Kay Co.??  Also, her sisters & brothers???  If so, I need some names for all these people.
 
There are other Staggs buried in Longwood, but didn't find any with your mothers name.
There are Alvis E. "Gene" Staggs + his wife Karen + their son Steven. Also, a Theodore R. Staggs and some others. Have no idea if these are yours, so give me some names & dates & I'll check again.  Shirley

Thank you so much for your reply.  Theodore Staggs is my mother's youngest brother.  Possibly Alvis E. Staggs is the brother my mother referred to as Eugene, who was younger or a brother she called Eulis, who was older.  My mother was born on April 30, 1922 and died November 23, 2008.  She is buried in Oregon.  Her oldest brother's name was Coy and he died at age 18 due to an accident when she was a small child, perhaps 3 or 4.  Her oldest sister was named Ina, and she also died at age 18 and was much older than my mother.  She had 2 other older sisters, Beulah and Elthea.  I do not know their birth dates.  She also had an older brother named Albert who I met as a child.  He lived in Midwest City for years and I think he is buried in that area.  Another older brother was called Johnnie, but I suspect he was named after her dad, John.  He died in Belflower, California, I think in the 1980s.  What I would really like to find is the birth dates of my grandparents, as I never knew the month or date.  It would help me in my search of records.  Once again, thank you.

As far as your grandfather John & Lillie, I did 1 quick census check
In 1920 they were in Taney, Mo. He age 38
In 1930 they were in Okfuskee, OK. He age 49
So would say he was born abt. 1881-1882 depending on when the census was taken.
 
I would suggest starting with the cenus. Start with the 1900 census, which would make him about 19-20. Could have been married by then. 1910 census might give you John & Lillie's names plus some of the kids

I am researching the Struble family and located a few buried in the Longwood Cemetery from your list on the internet.  The one I am particularly interested is Hattie Struble.  I was up there a couple of weeks ago and couldn't locate a grave marker for her.  I did locate her grandson Albert there.  If she had a marker it may have deteriorated over time.  I know she was living in the Longwood area at the time of the 1900 census, but was not with her husband at Pawnee at the time of his death in 1912, so I assume she died in the early 1900's.  I am trying to find the dates of her birth and/or death if there are any such records.  I thought since you show her buried there you might also have some dates or other information.  If so, I would certainly appreciate hearing back from you.

Charles / Josephine are husb. & wife. Am assuming Orville was their child.

I notice there are about 10 members of the Shupe family buried at Blackwell
Cemetery. Andrew and Juda Shupe were my great-great grandparents. Charles
and Josephine were indeed husband and wife. However, Orville E. Shupe was
the son of Nathaniel Andrew Shupe and Anna Rosetta Suman, both of whom are
buried at Newkirk Cemetery. Albert W. Shupe (son of Nathanial Shupe and
Anna Suman) and his wife, Clara Agatha Shupe, are also buried there.
Josephine M. Shupe was the daughter of Charles and Josephine, and she, too,
is buried at Blackwell Cemetery.

There are two Shupes buried at Blackwell Cemetery that I can't place. They
are Christina Marie Shupe 8 Jul 1982-8 Jul 1982 and Claracie Ann Shupe 31
May 1937-2 Jul 1939. Were there obituaries for them? I would be happy to
pay for any obituaries you can provide.

As far as the Shupe's they are pretty plentiful.
The ones that seem to be together according to cemetery records are

As to the Shupes buried at Blackwell Cemetery, Charles Shupe was one of
Andrew and Juda's sons. Orville E. Shupe and Albert W. Shupe were their
grandson's. Christina Marie was the daughter of Albert W. and Clara A.
Shupe. She would be Andrew and Juda's great-granddaughter. I still can't
find a fit for Claricie Ann.

You are so right about the Shupes being plentiful. Andrew and Judith
(Juda) Shupe had 13 children born in North Carolina and Tennessee before
they moved to Kay County. Their oldest daughter remained in Tennessee.
Their oldest son died young. Their 2nd daughter, Sarah Ann Shupe, died
giving birth to Phoebe, who was raised by her grandparents. The remaining
10 children spent part, if not all, of their lives in Kay County.

One of their daughters, Eliza Jane Shupe, is my great-grandmother. Her 1st
husband was James William Hamilton, my great-grandfather. They were
married 8 Jan 1893 in Arkansas City, Crowley County, Kansas. Her oldest
child was born in Arkansas City, but the rest of her children, including my
grandmother, were born in Blackwell. After her divorce from James Hamilton, Eliza married John J. Fogle. I don't have a date but it would have been between 1906 and 1909.
I was unable to locate them in the 1910 Census but, their son, Arthur, was b. 21
Feb 1910 Was there a marriage application for them?. Mr. Fogle died 24 Jul
1916. Need an obit for him, if possible.

Eliza then married Jeff White. I don't have a date, but she was married to
him when her sister, Rhoda Eveline (Shupe) Rennie passed away 24 Aug 1919,
according to Rhoda's obit. I located them in the 1920 Kay County Census.
Was there a marriage application for them? Did he die or were they
divorced? I couldn't locate him in the 1930 Census

Finally, Eliza married William Curtis sometime before her death 21 Mar 1945
in Blackwell. She is buried at Blackwell Cemetery.

Also, Eliza's son, Arthur Ralph Fogle, was b. 21 Feb 1910 in Oklahoma and
d. 21 Feb 1945 probably in Oklahoma. Is there an obit for him? Don't know
if he's buried in Kay County or not.

Eliza's youngest brother, Arthur Eugene Shupe, b. 14 Apr 1882 and d. 27
Apr 1963 at Newkirk and is buried at Newkirk Cemetery. I need an obit
Eliza's youngest sister was Lulu Ethel Shupe. She was born 2 Feb 1884 in
Tennessee. Her 1st husband was Frank Davis, whom she was married to when
her mother died in 1903.

According to Rhoda Rennie's 1919 obit, she was married to a
Mr. King and lived in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1921, she supposedly married
Linza Booth. He died in 1923 and she then moved back to Blackwell where
she died 14 Dec 1924. Need an obit for her.

I have an obit for Eliza's mother, Judith (Juda) Shupe, who d. 29 Dec 1903,
but it is very difficult to read. In her obit, Phoebe Shupe is listed as
her niece rather than her granddaughter.

Andrew Shupe who died 13 Jul 1901. If one is available, I'd like to have it.

I found the information on Velma Fogle most interesting. I had no idea she
was married once before she married Henry Dale Hinman. I found a copy of
her obituary after I requested the marriage information that stated she
married Henry Hinman on 2 Sep 1933 in Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas. Her
daughter Nina Jane, b. 13 Jul 1931 and possibly her daughter Margaret (I
don't have a date of birth) must have been children of William J. Cline. I
wonder if Henry Hinman adopted them. I always thought they were his
children. I wonder if there is a marriage application for Nina Jane Cline
or Hinman to a Tom West about 1951 or 1952?

Yes, Eliza Jane Fogle was called Jennie and would be the same Jennie E.

I'm attaching a copy of Emily Emma Legard's obit or death notice. It says
she was buried in a cemetery south of town. Would that be the IOOF
Cemetery or a different cemetery? She died 11 Mar 1912. There was an
article in the newspaper a few days following her death regarding 6 of her
children being received by the Christian Service League. As I look over the obituary for Louis J. (Otis) Looney, I think it'spossible he may have been buried in Tulsa or Oklahoma City. I'll have to look there for further information.

I realize Andrew Shupe's obit may not have made the paper, but I hope it
did.

Jeff White is a puzzle. According to the 1920 Census and Rhoda Rennie's
obit, he and Eliza Jane (Shupe) Hamilton Fogle were married. However, the
marriage application you found for Eliza Jane & William H. Curtis indicates
to me that she and Jeff White might have divorced. I don't find him in the
1930 Census, so I presume he may have died. This could be hard to find.

We know William H. Curtis is buried in Blackwell Cemetery, but there is no
information as to his date of birth or death. However, he survived Eliza
Jane who died March 21, 1945, so we know he died after that. I imagine
this is another one that could be hard to find.

Since you found a marriage application for Arthur R. Fogle to Lillie Alma
Crow dated June 29, 1942, I assume he probably died in Kay County, though
we haven't found him listed in any of the cemeteries, and we know he died a
month prior to his mother's death. Hopefully, an obit can be found for
him.

I could find no obit on Andrew J. Shupe nor Arthur R. Fogle. There are really no other Fogle's here to check (only what I have already sent you). It is more than likely Fogle left this area.

Same with Jeff White. No info in my records he is buried here & definitely without a complete death date, I have no way of searching for an obit.

I am attaching obit for William H. Curtis b. 6-21-1872 d. 11-6-1956 That was also very hard to find. I went to the Blackwell Cemetery & the sexton & I checked to see who bought the plot where he is buried. Turned out to be H. D. Hinman. Found the funeral home that had him. Then went to see them & got his b. & d. dates.

Both obits are from Blackwell Journal Tribune
1st one is Tues Nov 6 1956 2nd one is Wed Nov 7 1956

I would like to know if there is an obituary for William Lexington Stalnaker. He was born Sep. 7, 1834 in Gilmer Co Virginia. He died May 29, 1909 in Tonkawa, Kay co., Ok. He was the postmaster per 1900 census. His wife Mary Ann died Dec 24, 1918 in Tonkawa. They are buried in Riverview Cemetery.

Ella M Gelvin Schreckengaust Obit is located in Early Kay County Obituaries Vol 1 page 104 on the PGS Website. Indexed under Gelvin.
There is also a Delia/Delta, HF and a Ralph Irving Kimmel listed in Vol #1 and a Lena Kimmel in Vol #2
On the Kay County court records site there is also a case #CR-26-05497 dated 1/8/1926 State of OK vs Wm Shreckengaust

I was just checking out the website and noticed the query from Vangie Bass about W S. and Anna Shreckengaust.

Here is a photo if you wish to send it. I downsized it to 800x600.
They are in Block 14, Lot 192 of PC IOOF.

Gill Funeral Home shows that Anna died Jan 8, 1929 at age 78. (age doesn't agree with the stone dates.)
W. S. died March 8, 1915 at age 67.

The sexton notes show Anna was interred Jan 10, 1929.
They also show W. S. was interred on March 20, 1914 - that date is certainly suspect.

On this same lot are:
William L. Shreckengaust 1/24/1869 - 9/11/1943 (Miles Funeral Home)
Benjamin O. Shreckengaust 12/4/1889 - 9/17/1951 (Trout Funeral Home)

I believe Block 14 was one of those that got left out of the old cemetery book.

I am looking for information about Dudley Somerville and Emily Somerville.
They are in the 1910 Census in Tonkawa, Kay Co. In the 1920 Census
Dudley is listed as a widow...Emily died sometime between 1910-1920
but I have no exact date, no obit and no burial info although I have been
told she could be buried at IOOF in Blackwell. I cannot locate Dudley in
the 1930 Census so I believe he died between 1920-1930. Again, I have
no exact date, no obit and no burial info except the info that he also is
buried at IOOF in Blackwell.

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. I am hoping to locate the
headstones so I can get pictures someday. Thank you so much for your time.

I hope I'm not pushing my luck, but could I ask about another person in Kay Co?
It's my great great grandmother. Her name was Amelia Catherine Rankin. Sometimes
I've seen the Amelia first, other times the Catherine. Anyway, I know she died in
Ponca City but I am guessing at the date. I think around 1920-26. I believe she is
buried at IOOF in Ponca City. I have an obit but there is no date. Thank you so much
for the help you have given me. I am 2000 miles away and you all have been a
blessing!

I am hoping to find out if the Genealogical Society has any family files or the like on the SILVER and OARD families. Specifically, I am seeking the family of Joseph W. Silver (d. 4 March 1916), his children being:

Fay William Silver (d: ?),
Claud Silver (d: 29 June 1975),
Gertie M. [Silver] Oard (d. 6 March 1973), wife of Clarence A. Oard (d. 11 March 1971)

All but Fay William Silver are buried at Braman Cemetery in Braman, Kay County, as are additional family members. I am not sure when/where Fay William died or where he is buried (he could be at Braman, but I haven't been able to confirm that). He was born 18 Dec. 1885, and is wife was Luella [Seeley] Audiss (Seeley being her maiden name, Audiss her first married name). Their only child that I know of was Floyd R. Silver (b. 14 July 1915, Kay County).

Ultimately, I would like to locate their obituaries and any other information the Society may have about the Silver and Oard families. If it is preferred that I sent an inquiry by snail mail, please let me know. (Also, I would prefer my inquiry not be posted on the Society's website. Thanks.)

I did find on a 1910 census from Kay Co. the following were listed in the household.

Fay W. Silver 24
Claud O. 22
Girdie M. 18
Ruby E. Plesant 13

I found on the Social Security Death List that Floyd R. Silver died 1983 in San Diego, CA.

You didn't mention any Oard names but there are some in the Blackwell Cem.

That Silver family from the 1910 Census is the one I'm seeking. So far I have located where the father Joseph, and children Claud and Gertie are buried, but I haven't been able to locate Fay William Silver or his mother (Joseph's wife; first name unknown).

Are there any cemeteries in Lowe Township? I know the family lived for many years.

I am looking for a death date, or an obit or a cemetery records for my 3rd great grandfather JAMES SHARON/SHEERN who was born 30 November 1832 in Illinois. Surviving him would have been his widow Mary, a son Ernest F. Sheern/Sharon and a daughter Mary Elizabeth and his first wife Ann Emily Leseure who died in 1892.

I have located him in the 1900 Kay County Census living in Lowe Township. I located a plat map and sent for land records and have been able to narrow down his death between 1900 and 1904. In 1904 the application he made for homestead was granted a patent to his widow Mary Sharon. (Homestead Certificate #6217, Application #9357 made at the land office in Guthrie, OK) The description of the land is: The North Half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 34 in Township 29 North of Range 1 West of the Indian Meridian containing 80 acres. James had a brother, John Philip Sharon who owned land right next to him but did not live on it.

Boy, Sheri, I am having a difficult time finding your people. At this time I can not find James buried in any of the Braman Cemeteries (which Braman is in Lowe Township). I live in Blackwell, & Braman is about 9 m. N of us. Which I know the area well.

Due to your land records information, I know the exact area of the farm you mentioned.

And I have the Kay Co. Cem. Inscription Book to check, also, but do not find him buried in Braman nor any of the surrounding area close to here. I will keep checking for you, so may take some time.

And without an exact death date I can't find an obit for you either.

I did find James & his family on the 1880 census (which I'm sure you've already checked) living in Ladore, Neosho, KS. Then found his son Ernest, (with his wife & family) on 1910 census living in Barton, MO. Should you not have all that info. let me know & I can give you that or you can check it out yourself.

Let me know if you find out any other info that could possibly help me.

I appreciate your help so much. My Sheern/Sharon Line has been extremely challenging for me. I have had to get very creative when searching for records. Maybe you could answer my question about the land.

In 1904 Mary Sharon, Widow of James Sharon, is granted a patent for the land James had homesteaded. I have a copy of the patent granted to Mary. I don't have the original homestead application but I have the homestead certificate number and the application number. Here is the scenario:

James files the application for homestead and then dies between 1900 and 1904. When he died wouldn't the homestead thing have to go through probate in order for the patent to be awarded to Mary Sharon, Widow of James Shearn? James filed the homestead papers before he married Mary. I am almost certain of this.

Do you know which government office in Kay County would have the probate files for James Sheern who dies 1900-1904?

One more thing. Mary Sheern/Sharon dies around 1932 in Kay County do your indexes list her in any area cemetery? Her full name was Mary E. Malloy Sheern/Sharon? Sheri

Since you did give me Mary's death date, I might be able to find her info at the funeral home here in Blackwell, which more than likely took care of her funeral. The records I have on hand start at 1934. So will have to go to the funeral home to check on their farther back dates.

Our Kay Co. courthouse is in Newkirk, where I think the land records for this area would be kept. Here is the address you can write to

I am trying to research (as time allows) the Souligny family tree for my husband, Earl D. Souligny III. As a novice in this area of research, I am asking for guidance from your organization. Since his family helped to found Ponca City, I imagine that you will have a lot of information on the founding fathers. (He has family still living there.)

"This is my pioneer Story" written by Mrs. J. P. Souligny in the book "The last Run"
I'm afraid she writes the story as if one should know her family, but there is still some information to be gathered from it. In summary it says: She was born June 18, 1866 in Kankakee, IL. traveled to Mt Union, Pottawatomie Co, KS where her father homesteaded. Property still owned by the oldest son of my sister-in-law. Grew up there and married J. P Souligny in 1884. In 1890 went with her husband, oldest son, Ed P to live in Arkansas City [KS] where V. N. was born. Made the land run into OK.[1893] Then two years later Earl came to brighten our home. Stayed on the claim for five years and then moved to Ponca City. Baptized in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Kankakee, IL and always affiliated with the Prebyterian Church of Ponca City. That is really all the family info in the story. [There is quite a story]

There is also a room at the Historical Society in Blackwell that is filled with Painting by Alice Souligny whose husband is Earl. I don't believe there is any genealogical information.

"North Central Oklahoma - Rooted in the Past - Growing in the Future" In the Ira and Geneva (Landers) Edwards story,There is mention of a Dorothy May Edwards who married a Earl D Souligny in June 1941, but divorced in 1958. They had 2 children, Earl Douglass and Annabelle Louise and 4 grand children, Laurie Powell, Elizabeth, Ruth and Ben Souligny. This article says that the Souligny family is an old pioneer family. So there is probably more info that could be gathered, if one spent some time researching.
