Hugh
David Wiles, Ponca City resident, passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at
the Shawn Manor Nursing Center. He was 78.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the Albright United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sheila Combs-Francis, Albright United
Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Resthaven Memorial
Park under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.
Hugh was born Nov. 3, 1927, to Hugh Charles Wiles and Doris Burner Wiles
in Mound Valley, Labette County, Kan. Hugh attended school at Powell Junior
High in Washington D.C. and high school in Ponca City.
In 1945 Hugh enlisted in the U.S. Navy with five of his friends. They
were sent to San Diego, Calif., for boot camp. After he was released from
boot camp, Hugh served in World War II. He went aboard the USS Flusser,
DD 368 for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll and was in Amchitka,
Alaska, for the atomic bomb test in that location.
After the war Hugh married Phyllis J. Mann on Sept. 3, 1948, in Ponca
City. After Hugh and Phyllis' marriage, he went to work for the Ponca
City Light Plant on North Union. He went to Oklahoma A&M on the G.I.
Bill graduating 1953.
They had one son, Arnal D. Wiles who is deceased.
Hugh's hobbies included counted cross stitch, wood work, and playing computer
games.
He is survived by his wife of the home; sister, Margaret Wiles Palmer
of McLean, Va.; sister-in-law, Carol Mann of Marland; nieces, Lisa Kuecker
and Martha Chambers; and nephews, Doug Mann and Todd Mann.
He was preceded in death by his son, Arnal David Wiles; parents, Doris
Burner Wiles and Hugh C. Wiles; and stepmother, Margaret Howard Wiles.
Casket bearers will be Charlie McClelland, Todd Mann, David Long, Jim
Kuecker, Bill Kirkpatrick, Don Appleman and Doug Mann. Honorary casket
bearer will be Dick Powell.
