James Kenneth Wealand

Word has been received of the death of James Kenneth Wealand on Dec. 24, 1989, in the Woodlands Heights Hospital in Lufkin, Texas.
Mr. Wealand was a former resident of the Ponca City area, and the brother of Floyd Wealand and Marjorie Phillips, both of Ponca City.
Born in the Longwood Community on July 19, 1917, he was the son of Al and Alice Sutherland Wealand. He spent his youth in the Longwood and Prairie Chapel Communities, then graduated from Ponca City High School in 1934.
Mr. Wealand worked for the J. C. Penney Company in Ponca City until his induction into the army in August 1941. He was discharged in January 1946, having attained the rank of First Lieutenant. After his discharge, he returned to retail merchandizing in several Texas towns. He retired from K’s Thrift Center in Lufkin, Texas, after 20 years of service.
In October 1947 he married Gloria M. Jones in Waco, Texas. She preceded him in death in October 1984.
Wealand had been involved in the Youth Baseball Program in Lufkin since 1961, and was an avid baseball fan. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Michele Hill of Clawson, Texas; two sons, Leslie Allen and Michael Kent, both of Lufkin; three granddaughters and one grandson; two brothers, Floyd Wealand of 1927 North Seventh in Ponca City, and Howard Wealand of Cedar Point, Kan.; three sisters, Aline Rhodes of Wichita, Betty Gwartney of Omaha, Neb., and Marjorie Phillips of 248 Wayne in Ponca City; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Gloria, he was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter.
Funeral service was held in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel on Dec. 27, with Dr. John Wood officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Lufkin.
