P.M.
Kyger and family went up to Winfield, Kans., Sunday morning, called there
by the serious illness of John R. Sumpter, formerly of this county. Mr.
Kyger and daughter, Helen, returned Sunday evening and Mrs. Kyger returned
Monday evening. Mr. Sumpter is very low with catarrh of the stomach and
his many friends in this city and the vicinity of his old home, Sumpter,
will be sorry to learn of his serious condition.
JOHN R. SUMPTER
DEAD
John R. Sumpter, who formerly lived in Sumpter, in this county, died last
Saturday morning at his home in Winfield, Kansas. The funeral was held
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and was conducted by the Winfield G.A.R.
Post. Mr. Sumpter came to this county from Winfield soon after the opening
and bought a relinquishment to a quarter section of land, a part of which
is now Sumpter. He engaged in a general mercantile and grain buying business
at Sumpter, and left here some four years ago on account of failing health.
He spent the first year after leaving here in Illinois, then a year in
California, and the past two years in Winfield, but has steadily failed
in health and strength. The end came suddenly and sooner than anticipated,
but was inevitable as his case was incurable. Mrs. P.M. Kyger and daughter
Helen went from her to attend the funeral. The Sumpters had many friends
here who will regret to learn of his death, and who will join with us
in sympathy to the bereaved family.
