RAY SHAVER DEAD Ray Shaver, who was shot by the foot pad at Newkirk last Wednesday evening, died Thursday at the Winfield, Kans., hospital, where he had been taken for treatment. According to the Newkirk, papers Mr. Shaver had been to the train and was returning home and when near his home was accosted by the would be robber who told him to throw up his hands. Mr. Shaver, instead of complying, struck the fellow with an umbrella and was immediately shot, but the robber fled without robbing his victim. Mr. Shaver crawled to the door of Mr. Thomas, a neighbor, and succeeded in arousing him and was taken in and cared for. Doctor Emerson, of Winfield, was called in consultation and Mr. Shaver was taken to Winfield for hospital care, but his wound proved fatal, resulting in his death as above stated. He was one of Newkirk’s best known young men; and his death under the circumstances is indeed deplorable. RAY SHAVER’S DEATH Newkirk,
Okla., April 25, - The search in this vicinity for the footpad who on
Wednesday night shot Ray Shaver, has been abandoned in this locality and
the idea prevails that the man has gone from this place. Shaver died in
the Winfield hospital Saturday morning. It is likely the county commissioners
will offer a reward for the murderer. What is considered an important
clue has been discovered at Winfield. A resident of the district near
the Santa Fe depot found a bundle of clothing in the alley back of his
residence on the morning following the murder. This bundle was wrapped
in a paper bearing the advertisement of the Newkirk Dry Goods company.
It contained some working clothes and a pair of shoes.
