Terrible
boiler explosion!
At Newkirk Monday evening, and John Reeves is killed.
A terrible boiler explosion occurred at the feed mill run by Williams
and Co at Newkirk, on last Monday evening. The boiler had long been considered
unsafe by the engineer, and negotiations were already being made for a
new one. The particulars appear to be as follows: one man was killed and
another one slightly injured. When the explosion occurred, John Reeves
was standing in front of the boiler throwing cobs into the fire. Reeves
and the front end of the boiler were blown through this side of the feed
mill. The boards were broken as if they had been small sticks. There were
two holes in the side of the feed mill. One was where the man was blown
through, and the other the front end of the boiler. The head end of the
boiler was found in a kitchen 75 feet distant. It was blown through the
kitchen wall and the window glass in this house was badly broken. The
excitement was high for a time, and it took some time to be certain, who
was injured and killed. Williams thought his boy was killed, but the boy
had left a few seconds before the explosion occurred.
