Obituary
Mrs. W. A. Purdy
died Oct. 24th, 1900, at the residence of J. N. Campbell, in Oklahoma,
four miles south of Caldwell, Kansas, aged 26 years, 1 month and 25 days.
Her maiden name was Birdie Scott, daughter of Lewis and Maria Scott. She
was born in Sedgwick county Kansas, Aug. 27, 1874. In 1893 the family
moved to Oklahoma, and on July 19, 1899 she was married to W. A. Purdy,
who is called this early to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted wife.
A little girl four months old survives its mother. Mrs. Purdy’s
father mother, three sisters and three brothers survive her, all of whom
live in Oklahoma.
Mrs. Purdy, during a protracted illness, suffered much and was patient
and kind and hopeful to the last. Her trust was in her Savior and she
expressed herself as ready and willing to go should it be the Lord’s
will for her to depart from this world. Previous to her illness she had
announced her intention of uniting with the church and would have done
so had her life been spared. It was a great comfort to hear her expressions
of confidence in God’s promises and willingness to leave all to
his love and wisdom.
The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church of Caldwell at 10 a.m.
Saturday, October 27, and a number of friends and acquaintances were present.
The pastor of the church Rev. W. W. Curtis, conducted the services, assisted
by Rev. J. A. Holmes of the M. E. church. The burial was in the Caldwell
cemetery. The little child, so early bereaved of its mother, will be most
kindly cared for in the home of Mr. And Mrs. J. N. Campbell. The entire
community most heartily sympathizes with Mr. Purdy and the other friends
who have been so deeply affected. It is cheering to remember that they
mourn “not without comfort.”
