Hold Tribe Rites for Woman
Ponca
City, Aug 4. - (Special) -
Traditional tribal funeral ceremonies have been continued by the Ponca
Indians during the past several days, lamenting the death of Mrs. Louise
Poor-horse, 85 years old, one of the veterans of the tribe. She was a
young woman with her tribe when the final battles were fought with the
Sioux in the early '70's, and came with the Poncas when the federal government
moved them to this section of Oklahoma several years later. A "give-away"
party, during which her personal property was distributed among members
of the tribe, featured the ceremony.
