SUICIDED
BY HANGING
Justice of the Peace J. M. Bunten, was called to the country last Sunday
to hold an inquest over the body of S. P. Patton, who lived 6 ½
miles southwest of this city. Mr. Patton had been a resident of the county
less than one year having moved here from Iowa last spring. He was a man
who had had much trouble and was at times very despondent, but since coming
here the family had thought him improved in health and spirits. He had
been moody for a week or more prior to his death, and the family had been
unusually watchful, but he disappeared about 5 o’clock Sunday morning
and when found by his son, was dead, having suicided by hanging himself
to a tree overhanging the creek about a half mile from the house. He had
been a man of considerable wealth and influence, and the family was hopeful,
that he had overcome his despondent moods since coming here. The neighbors
testified to his general worth, and the many friends thoroughly sympathize
with the family in their affliction.
