GEO. NICHOLS DEAD. George L. Nichols died at his home in this city early Monday morning after a lingering illness of cancer. Mr. Nichols had been ailing for about a year, but with the grit and tenacity for which he was noted he never took to his bed until compelled to, and but few even of his friends knew until a month or two ago that he was afflicted with a cancerous aliment and that recovery was well nigh impossible. He had the best medical attention here and was recently taken to Winfield, Kan., where an operation was performed but of no avail, and when he was brought home the friends and family knew that it was only a question of time until they would have to give him up. Mr. Nichols was a man of a quiet, rather reserved disposition, but had a boat of friends. He had been in business most of the time while here, and has been a resident since 1804 except the few months that the family was on the claim in the new country. The funeral was from the residence Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Thos. F. Barrier, of the Presbyterian Church and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends; the interment was in Odd Fellows cemetery, south of the city. George
L. Nichols was 42 years of age at the time of his death; he was born in
Chicago, Ill., but grew to manhood in Jackson County, Kan. He lived in
different parts of Kansas and came here in1894 from Kansas City, Mo. Mr.
Nichols leaves a widow and one child, a son; and has three brothers here,
Walter, Frank and Harry, all of whom have been most assiduous in their
care of the afflicted brother; another brother John J., who lives in Biloxi,
Miss., was here for the funeral; the only sister, Mrs. E.B. Rust, of Lawton,
and one brother, W.J.Nichols, of the new country, were unable to be here
on account of sickness in their families, and the aged father who lives
in California, was unable to be here on account of the great distance
and his age. |
