W. E. MOODY’S SAD MISSION

I have just returned from Elgin, Okla., where I buried my brother who took his own life by shooting himself with a 38-calibre pistol. Brother had been despondent ever since his wife died, at Junction City, Kansas, four years ago. He leaves five children, of whom one is with a brother in Kansas, two are with James Moody, a brother, at Marshall, O. T., and I brought one with me. We knew of no reason for this affair, except that he became despondent on account of losing his wife, and to the awful tragedy of James Estes, of Marshall, who killed our sister, Mrs. Estes, and her daughter Mabel and himself, and to this tragedy was added the fact that his oldest son left him about two months ago, going to parts to brother unknown, but is now at Waurika, I. T. We laid away brother’s remains in the cemetery at Apache, Comanche county, six miles from his home. He had a beautiful farm on Cache creek, three miles from Elgin, which we must sell. There are 120 acres of fine wheat to go with it. After brother had shot himself his son Ray ran out to him and brother reached up his hand and said; “Good-bye, I have killed myself. I am sorry, but I can’t help it now. I am not a coward, but not brave enough for the trials I have had to undergo.”
