G. Long Passes Away
J. G. Long died at his home, on Maple street, at three o’clock a.
m., this morning, aft a brief illness ulcerative dysentery.
Mr. Long was an active, energetic citizen and a good businessman. He handled
farm implements in connection with a general blacksmithing business and
had a large trade among the farmers of the county. He also erected and
was the proprietor of Long’s Opera House. Mr. Long was several times
elected to the city council from his ward, but was defeated for mayor
last spring by a small majority.
Joe was one of the early settlers of Newark and lived long enough to see
it grow from a shack town to a beautiful city of the first-class. Thus,
one by one the old land marks pass away.
to his wife and children the sympathy, not only of the SOCIALIST. but
of the whole community is extended in this their sad hour of trial and
bereavement.
