Flossie Marie Kirkendall

Flossie Marie Kirkendall, longtime Newkirk resident, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday morning, Feb. 15, 2007, at her home. She was 83.

The daughter of Acie Franklin and Maud Fidelia Huffman Goodno, she was born July 27, 1923, in Uncas. She received her education in the Uncas and Middleton schools, leaving school her senior year to care for her infant sister. Later she worked as a housekeeper and children's caregiver for a few families in Newkirk.

On March 22, 1944, Flossie and Harold "'Bus" Kirkendall were married in Newkirk. They established their first home in the rural Newkirk area and moved into Newkirk in 1946.

In the 1960s she worked with her husband in their pawn shop in Ponca City. Later they owned and operated a water well drilling business and the Kirkendall Auto Salvage, and she worked as secretary and bookkeeper for the businesses. Mr. Kirkendall died June 2, 2003.

Flossie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newkirk but had been attending Christ's Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts, cutting out the woodworking pieces with power saws herself. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing and upholstering, and camping.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, J.R. and Carolyn Kirkendall of Newkirk; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Leslie Johnston and Viva and Bruce Eastin, all of Newkirk; one brother, Elzie "Hoot" Goodno of Ponca City; four sisters, Wilma Jean Alexander and Letha Young, both of Detroit, Mich., Nancy Davenport and Vera Case, both of Newkirk; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Clint and Leigh Anne Johnston, and Chad and Jamie Johnston, all of Newkirk, Gail and Mike Voegele of Kildare, Carol and Mike Leaming of Peckham, Terri Pameticky and M.J. Nash of Ponca City, Jay Kirkendall, James and Regina Kirkendall, Traci Kirkendall, all of Newkirk, Kelli and John Polakowski, Kerri Kirkendall and Lindsay Kirkendall, all of Ponca City; 24 great-grandchildren, Jacob Voegele, Taylor Voegele, Kayla Johnston, Audrey Johnston, Jaycee Johnston, Colton Leaming, Emi Jo Leaming, Chase Johnston, Chelsea Johnston, Shea Johnston, Mason Sayre, Lane Pameticky, Daniel Pameticky, Kaylyn Pameticky, Ryan Meyers, Dylan Nash, Dakota Kirkendall, Baylee Kirkendall, Gage Kirkendall, Abbie Kirkendall, Collyer Polakowski, Megan Polakowski, Jayse Polakowski and Gracyn More; and one great-great-grandaughter, Tayton Paige Voegele.

In addition to her husband Bus, Flossie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, LeRoy Goodno and Robert Goodno; one granddaughter, Gaila Eastin; and three great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Johnston, Patrick Meyers and Cody Nash.

The funeral has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Christ's Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Stephen Harshman officiating. Interment will follow in Newkirk Cemetery. Great-grandsons will serve as casket bearers. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mrs. Kirkendall's name to either Hospice of North Central Oklahoma or Christ's Church through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk, Okla. 74647-0468.

The family will be at 500 East 5th Street in Newkirk.
