MAE MARSHALL KEATHLY
Lulu
Mae Marshall Keathly, Ponca City resident, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005,
at Shawn Manor Nursing Home. She was 77.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, in the chapel
of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Seabaugh, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Trout
Funeral Home.
Lulu Mae "Lou" Marshall Keathly was born to Dwight Park and
Lulu Bell Hopper Marshall in Grenola, Kan., on June 11, 1927. Her family
lived in Ponca City until 1930 and, after several moves with Continental
Oil Company, returned to Ponca City in 1935. She graduated from Ponca
City High School in 1945. An only child, she held a special bond with
her parents.
Lulu Mae married Jack Wayne Keathly in Ponca City on May 18, 1945. They
established a farm home in the Bressie community south of Ponca City on
land still in the family today. In 1958, to insure a better education
for their three children, they purchased a second home in Ponca City and
for many years Lou was a homemaker for both the farm and the town homes.
Lou was very active in her children's activities. She was a den mother
for Cub Scouts, a Camp Fire leader, a home room mother and held various
offices in the Liberty School PTA.
In 1960 she supported her husband in the establishment of Keathly Nursery
on the family farm in Bressie. In 1964 the nursery was moved to its present
site in Osage County and renamed Keathly Nursery and Landscape Company.
Lou worked in the family business until ill health caused her retirement
in 1999.
Her hobbies included her grandchildren's activities, reading, travel,
antiques and, her passion, genealogy. She collected a large home library
of genealogy materials and, with her husband or friends, traveled the
United States in search of family genealogy information. One trip took
them to Ireland to find the Keathly family roots. She was named Outstanding
Nurserywoman of the Year in 1988. She became a member of The Daughters
of the American Revolution on Oct. 14, 1977.
She worked diligently with the DAR and served on several committees for
more than 25 years. She also served on the Ponca City Library board and
the Friends of the Cultural Center. She was a member of both the 101 Ranch
Oldtimer's Association and 101 Collectors organization. She was a member
of First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jack of the home; three children and their
spouses, David and Marcia Keathly, Jane and Bruce Horinek and Richard
and Jackie Keathly, all of Ponca City; her grandchildren, Bryan Trigalet
of Marland, Jonathan and Cindy Keathly of Frisco, Texas, Ezra Smith, Elisa
Smith and Park Waller of Ponca City, Layne Keathly of Stillwater, and
Austin and Annie Keathly of Ponca City; her great-grandchildren, Carson
Smith and Jude and Joel Shed of Ponca City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Casket bearers will be her six grandsons and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association
or Ponca City Hospice, c/o Trout Funeral Home, 505 W. Grand, Ponca City,
Okla. 74601.
