DROWNED
IN SALT FORK
Joseph Johnson, aged
23 years, was drowned in the Salt Fork river at what is known as the lower
ford, about six o’clock last Saturday evening. The body was not
recovered until 10 o’clock Sunday morning.
It appears that young Johnson, who was employed on what is known as the
Cal Sloan ranch, had gone to the river after his day’s work for
the purpose of bathing. His clothes were found on the bank of the river
where he had undressed. The supposition is that he was taken with the
cramps while in the water and was unable to help himself. His cries for
help were heard by the neighbors, but none were able to reach him in time
to render assistance.
Immediate search was made for the body, but it was not recovered until
10 o’clock the next day. The body was brought to Hayden’s
undertaking rooms in the city, where it was prepared for burial.
The funeral will be held at 4 o’clock this afternoon in Prairie
Chapel, northwest of town, near which the parents of the young man reside,
and interment will be made in the Prairie Chapel cemetery. - Ponca Courier.
