Alfred Jenkins committed suicide last Sunday at one clock PM at his home in joining rock falls on the south. The particulars is gathered by a Times record representatives are as follows: Deceased had been of unsound mind at times for a number of years and had been worse than ever before, for a week preceding his death. On the about date, he arose from his bed, and bade his aged wife goodbye and said he was going to kill himself, telling her that his body would be found down near the river. His son, J. W. Jenkins, a young man, 22 years of age, followed him, begging him to come back to the house. The old gentleman carried with him a rope and made the excuse to the boy that he was going to catch a horse. The boy entreated him to give him the rope and he would catch the horse, whereupon the father drew his knife from his pocket and commanded him to go to the house or he would kill him. At this the boy became frightened and ran to the home of an older brother, a few hundred yards distant, to secure help to keep his father from doing himself bodily harm, but when he returned the deed was done. The deranged father had plunged the knife into his throat, severing the jugular vein, causing immediate death.
Deceased was 60 years old, made the race for a claim at the opening, and secured a good one adjoining rock falls on the south. He was formally from Davis County Missouri and leaves an aged wife and a family of grown up children to mourn his sad end [Rock Falls Cemetery]
