FOUR PEOPLE DROWNED

While Attempting to Cross River Four Sumner County People Were Drowned

Late Sunday afternoon, J. J. Hanley, a farmer living near Wellington, with his wife and five children attempted to cross the Chicaskia River in a wagon shortly after a heavy rain. When they reached midstream Hanley unhitched the team and placing his wife and five children on the horses, attempted to have them swim to the opposite bank. Mrs. Hanley, with a baby in her arms, and two of the other children, were swept from their places by the swollen waters, and all were drowned except a boy of 10, who clung to the wagon box that had floated away and was rescued the next morning, after having been in the water nearly twelve hours Hanley and one child reached the bank in safety, but were unable to do anything to rescue the others. All the bodies except that of the baby have been recovered.
