Floyd Wendell Haney was born April 21, 1919, in Newkirk, the son of Loynel L. and Mabel Lane Haney. He grew up in the Newkirk area and received his early education in the Newkirk schools, graduating from Newkirk High School with the class of 1939.

On Aug. 13, 1942, Wendell was inducted into the United States Army and served with Company D 757 Military Police Battalion. He was honorably discharged Feb. 2, 1946. After his discharge he was employed as a quality control specialist in civil service at the North Naval Base in San Diego. He also attended San Diego Junior College and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1955. Wendell retired April 1974, and he returned to Newkirk in 1981 after the death of his first wife.

On Sept. 3, 1983, Wendell and Mary Lucille Lockwood Coates were married in Edmond. They established their home in Tonkawa, living there until 1990 when they moved to Ponca City.

Wendell was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Newkirk, but for the last several years he attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ponca City. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Huff-Minor Post 14. One of Wendell's priorities was to raise his American flag in the morning and to lower it at night. He cherished visits from his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed fishing. He took great pleasure in riding through Kaw Country, remembering earlier days. He also relished helping out on area farms just to drive the tractors around.
