Sheriff Ford Killed
Word was received here, Monday night, that Sheriff Ford had been run over
by the cars and killed at Ponca City that evening. According to the Courier,
Sheriff Ford with deputies L. B. Hart and D. R. Drissol, and J. J. Whallon
of Ponca City were standing out on the platform as the train from Newkirk
at 9:15 entered Ponca City and that about a block before reaching the
platform the sheriff swung off the train. The other gentlemen went on
to the station, and walked back to meet him, and found him on the track
face down; they turned him over and asked him if he was hurt, and he replied
"I am killed" and died in a very few moments. The body was almost
cut in two at the hips and the lower limbs crushed and ground to a pulp.
A jury was summoned by Justice of the Peace Erwin, and they found that
he came to his death by being run over by the train. The body was then
taken to the undertaking rooms and prepared for burial, and taken Tuesday
morning to his home in Newkirk. Mr. Ford was about 47 years of age, and
leaves a wife, son, and daughter both grown. Mr. Ford had been in office
only since last November, but was counted a capable, courageous and painstaking
official, and died while doing his duty as an official. He left the train
before reaching the station so that the offenders he was after might not
have the knowledge that he was in town, that would have been carried to
them had he got off at the station. The heart felt sympathy of all of
the citizens go out to his estimable family this their sudden bereavement.
