SPENCER BURKS DOWIS

Spencer Dowis died at Shippensburg, Pa, Saturday, July 11, and was buried from the family residence in this city Tuesday evening of this week.

Mr. And Mrs. Dowis and the boy were visiting relatives of Mrs. Dowis in Pennsylvania, and early last week Spencer was taken sick with stomach and bowel trouble; for several days his condition was not alarming, but towards the last of the week he grew worse, and word came Saturday, by letter, of his condition, followed later that day by a telegram announcing his death. It was a great shock to the many friends here, and their sympathy went out to the sorrowing parents as they brought their little one back the long sad journey of nearly half across the continent. Loving friends made ready the home and did everything possible to mitigate their grief upon their arrival, and the funeral Tuesday evening was attended by many of their friends. The floral offering were many and beautiful, and came from friends here and abroad. The funeral service at five o’clock was conducted by Rev. Z. A. Harris, of the Christain church, the music being by a mixed choir from several of the churches. The interment was in I.O.O.F. cemetery south of the city.
Spencer Burks Dowis, was born in Blackwell, Okla., Nov. 29, 1905, and died in Shippensburg, Penn., Saturday, July 11. He was the only child of Mr. And Mrs. G. E. Dowis, and although less than three years of age had a firm hold upon the hearts of many our of people. Spencer was a bright, manly little fellow and favorite with all who knew him, so that his death does not bereave the parents alone, but the neighbors and friends as well. Mr. And Mrs. Dowis although heart broken are being in a measure sustained by the knowledge that in their great sorrow, they have the loving sympathy of their many friends. Such a sorrow comes sooner or later to all, and whether it be early in life, as it has come to these bereaved ones or later as it comes to others, it is the same overwhelming despair. Upon the fine mother, the blow falls heaviest and she will recall every tone and every gesture of her baby, and while now such recollections call forth anew a flood of tears from eyes that can still see the loved one, in time such recollection will be but a sweet memory, both precious and comforting God alone can give solace and permanent healing to such broken hearts.
