CAPTAIN
DAY'S FUNERAL
The funeral of Captain Chas. Day was held last Friday, under the direction
of the Blue Lodge of Masona of this city. A special train of a baggage
car and three coaches had been provided for the funeral party and the
route was the Santa Fe via Ponca City. The Blue Lodge with Knights Templar
as escort and the members of G. A. R. Post No. 62, with other friends
assembled at the house at a little after 11 o'clock and accompanied the
remains to the depot, the train leaving here at about 11:30, with probably
200 on board, including Past Grand Master W. L. Eagleton of Pawnee, Okla.
At Ponca City a number of Knights Templar and Past Grand Master Fred Sparks
joined the party and at Newkirk another body of Knights Templar. At Winfield
the train was met by Knights Templar and other Masonic bodies and many
citizens, old friends and acquaintances of the deceased, who escorted
the funeral party to the Baptist Church where services were held. Rev.
E. O. Ebright formerly pastor of the Winfield Methodist church and former
pastor of Captain Day, delivered the adoration which was a beautiful and
impressive address. A mixed quartet furnished the music and the ritualistic
funeral service of the Blue Lodge was delivered by Acting Master F. M.
Butcher, both at the church and the cemetery. At the cemetery, Captain
Crites of the Post, read the G.A.R. burial service. The floral offerings
were beautiful and significant and many friends from here and Winfield
in that manner showed their high regard for their friend. The pall bearers
were Jacob Crites, J.L. Waite and G.B. Lawson represented the Post, and
J.W. Morse, Walter Franks and J.W. Randall representing the Blue Lodge.
Burial was in a vault in the family lot in the Winfield cemetery where
Mrs. Day and their son, Dr. Frank Day, are also buried.
