Clark Dead
The dispatches last week announced that Sheriff McCracken of Barber County
Kansas had been shot while attempting to arrest one J. C. Clark, at Kiowa,
who was illegally selling liquor. A deputy who was aiding the sheriff,
shot Clark in the right leg and arrested him and took him to the jail
at Wellington, Kansas. Sheriff McCracken died from the effect of his injuries,
and Monday, Clark died in the Wellington jail. Clark's wound was not considered
serious at first but blood poisoning set in and an operation was attempted,
but the dispatches state that he died from the shock. Some of our citizens
recognize in J. C. Clark, a man who formerly lived on west Blackwell avenue
in this city, and who was known as Uncle Jimmie Clark. While here he was
a hard drinker, but when not in liquor, was considered a good sort of
fellow, and his friends here are surprised at his double crime.
