DYING ALL ALONE
Young Man found in Unconscious Condition
DYING ON A PUBLIC ROAD
From the Effects of Whisky or a Drug
As Herbert
Beach, a dairyman, was on his way into Ponca City, he found a man lying
in the road just at the east edge of town. The man appeared to be dead,
but on examination was found to be still breathing. He proved to be a
young man named William Clancy, who had been working for John Gibson,
a farmer living a short distance east of Ponca City. The young man was
brought to town and a physician called, but he was beyond medical aid,
and died shortly afterwards.
Young Clancy was about 23 years old, and came to this county from Joplin
Mo., a few months ago, where he had been working in the lead mines. Friday
he drew some of his wages from Mr. Gibson and came to town. The supposition
is he started home a-foot late in the evening and being overcome with
liquor, fell down in the road where he was found in a dying condition.
Among some, however, there is an opinion that he was given knockout drops
or some other drug for the purpose of robbing him, and that he died from
the effects of the drug. Of late there have been two or three suspicious
circumstances in this city, that lead many to the conclusion that several
men have been “doped” and robbed in Ponca City. It is said
the young man’s parents live at Vinita, Indian Territory.
