Charles Leroy Brown NEWKIRK — Charles Leroy Brown, Newkirk resident and formerly of Ponca City, died early Monday morning, Jan. 29, 2007, in the Ponca City Nursing and Rehab Center. He was 77. The funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Irvine Bobb Jr., minister of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Newkirk, officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. The body will lie in state at the funeral home Thursday until 5 p.m. and Friday until 9 p.m. Charles Leroy Brown was born May 31, 1929, in McAlester, the son of Albert and Pearl Leana Brown Batum. He began his education in McAlester and, moving with his family later to Newkirk, he finished his education in Ponca City. Later he honorably served his country with the United States Army. After his discharge he lived in California, Washington and Kansas. In 1954 Charles married Maggie Lee Baily, and to that union one son was born. The family lived in Enid and he was employed as a waiter. On Aug. 14, 1995, Charles and LaVern McDaniel were married. They had no children. Charles lived in Ponca City for many years and operated his own mechanic business. He moved to Newkirk in 2001 to be near his aging mother. He worked for a time at the Newkirk Co-op. He was a longtime member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was ordained a deacon of the church in 1982. He also helped with Meals-On-Wheels and was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed working on engines and fishing. Charles liked talking with people and had a good sense of humor. He relished sitting down to a good home cooked dinner. He is survived by one son, Albert Lamond Brown of Oklahoma City; an aunt, Sara Graham of Ardmore; and cousin, Henry Graham of Ardmore; and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his two wives and his parents. Those serving as casket
bearers will be Joseph Tipton, Fred Collins, Ken Bellmard, James Roland,
James Montgomery and Kevin Roland. |
