Beekman Dead
An Old Soldier Gone
Found
Dead in a Lodging House in Which He Had put Up For the Night.
He Was a Prominent Lawyer and an Active G. A. R. Worker
Hon. J. V. Beekman of Arkansas City was found dead in his room at 10:40
on the night of June 30th.
Judge Beekman was one of the most prominent criminal lawyers in Southern
Kansas. He was well known throughout this county. He gained considerable
notoriety in the Anderson-Gray Murder Case at Wellington some time since.
He represented Cowley County, Kansas one term in the Legislature.
Judge Beekman was regarded quite an orator, his services was always in
demand at G. A. R. meetings and the 4th of July’s. Like many other
brilliant men who have gone the same way, he was addicted to the use of
whiskey and morphine to such an extent that his constitution was impared.
Judge Beekman is gone.
