CURRENT PROJECT
CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS

Project Chairman - Jay Stafford

The Pioneer Genealogical Society decided as a project to record the tombstone inscriptions of the cemeteries around Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma. The Kay County Cemetery book had been published in 1978 and needed an update.

The project consists of computerizing the sexton’s records, sorting by location and transcribing the tombstone inscriptions for each cemetery. The result is a sorted list by name, including the location, inscriptions, symbols and other names on tombstone.
The above-mentioned data, along with other sexton data, such as lot owner, sex, funeral home, place of death and other family data from obituaries, etc is compiled for future publication. The project at this time includes approximately 24 cemeteries.

The group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays
at 9:30 am in the basement of the
Ponca City Public Library

Anyone wishing to help with this project is welcome to attend the meeting. Help consists of walking the cemeteries, transcribing tombstones and taking digital pictures, computer entry of information collected or proof reading the print copy. The project is finally nearing the end, but there is still plenty to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
