Richard O. (Dick) Scatterday, 62, died in his hotel room in Chicago on Friday February 28th. He had a heart ailment for sometime. He was national advertising representative for the Kelly-Miller circus. Scatterday was widely recognized in the circus business for his connections with national advertisers, with whom he negotiated advertising for circus programs and such attractions as Kelly-Miller's six-horse hitch and display wagon. He was the son of a prominent Pontiac, Illinois bottler of ginger ale, and he began circus business as a banner salesman on World Bros. Circus in 1923. He stayed with this show as Robbins Brothers and subsequently worked banners on Lee Brothers, Miller Brothers 101 Ranch, Sparks Barnes, Orrin Davenport dates, Downie Brothers and Cole Brothers Circus, the latter for ten years. He left Cole for Kelly-Miller in 1949. Survivors include his widow, Belle, at Pontiac, two sons, John of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Richard Jr. of Michigan, a sister on the music faculty of Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois and brothers.
