Fred Olmstead

Officiate as Derby Starter

Fred Olmstead, located Big Springs, Texas, during the past two years looking after oil matters there for the late George L. Miller, is at home at Marland and at the 101 Ranch in order to carry out his part of the terrapin derby at the ranch arena on Labor day-that of official started. (sic) Olmstead has held that important position ever since the derby was inaugurated by Col. Joe C. Miller six years ago.

Those who attend the derby this year will probably see Olmstead in a new costume. Heretofore he has been dressed in the well known conventional black formal evening dress as starter. Hence forward, or at least this year, his costume will look more like that of a minstrel king. Recently, on instructions from the derby association, he was authorized to purchase the new costume.

A terrapin, named for the head Chicago gangster, Scar Face Al, was entered for the derby Saturday by Jim Drummond of Wichita. Evidently he expects the crawler to beat his way through. Pike's Peak is the name of an entry by Mark Perkinson of Colorado Springs.
