Juanita (Logwood) Mothes

Juanita Mothes, 81, 101 Ranch Old Timer member lives in Carthage, Mo. Juanita lived with her on the ranch for 12 years, 1921-1933, first in a tent and then in a house in "summer camp" on the Salt Fork River. Her father, "Ammie" Logwood was Assistant Foreman at the Power House. "My mother Desta Logwood, rode fence lines with another cowgirl, and kept a tally on the number of cattle in each section of land."

Juanita remembers Mabel (Pender) Weant, her 101 Ranch School teacher, who remained her friend for many years. She remembers the big flood of July 1923 when the river bridge washed out. "Our school house was down by the river bridge - Many houses on the ranch washed away , but ours stayed."

"No TV in those days, we camp kids would get up early in the morning, go to the river to watch the cowboys swim the dairy cows across the river to pastures, also bring them across at evening time. We also watched the cowboys bring in beef cattle to be branded, dipped in a huge vat - to kill ticks. Some of us were brave enough to stay and watch them dehorn the cows, now that was entertainment."
