101 Ranch Champion Trick Roper Hank Darnell, Dies Ponca City News, Sept. 9, 1979 Word of the Death of Hank Darnell has been received here by Mike Sokoll, president of the 101 Ranch Oldtimers. Darnell died at 2:30 a.m. Sept. 3 at his home in Grand Ronde, Ore. One time champion trick roper with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, Darnell and Sokoll rode in several large rodeos together-Pendleton, Cheyenne, Calgary, Monte Vista, Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium and at Chicago’s World Fair in 1933. Darnell makes the third Oldtimer to die this year, Mike said. Jack Mulhall, former 101 Ranch star and movie actor, died in February, and Sally Rand, with whom Mike became friends in 1921 at the 101 Ranch, died last week. Mike had planned a visit with Darnell on Sept. 17, and will go ahead with his plans to visit Hank’s family at that time.
