Enola Buffman of Wichita, Kansas is a member of the 101 Ranch Old Timers. Enola lived with her family on the 101 Ranch at "Summer Camp" on the north bank of the Salt Fork for five years, 1923-1927. Her father, Jep Anderson worked on the ranch, her mother at the ranch hotel, and she went to the school on the ranch near the River Bridge. "It was a great day when our teacher would dismiss school for the arrival of the 101 Circus Train. It carried all the show people - what excitement for us to see real live bears, lions, tigers, monkeys, apes, and especially the elephants." Once some of the students, including Enola, were filmed in a wild west movie on the ranch. Enola has many memories: the big bell they rang if there was trouble on the ranch; especially the big flood of 1923 when many had to leave their homes, and the cattle had to swim to dry ground. The bridge washed out and Joe C. Mille had a ferry built for crossing. "I picked apples for 5 cents a bushel, and grapes for 5 cents a small basket, also lots of cotton. 101 Ranch Old Timers Calendar 2001 |
