“With the opening of the Cherokee Strip to settlement, 1893, the last ties that bound us as comrades vanished, for the old time cowboys, who settled on claims, scattered to all parts of Oklahoma and adjoining states. The above condition existed until September 5 and 6, 1920, when a rodeo was held in Buffalo Pasture about two miles south of the 101 Ranch, by the Miller Brothers. Joe C. Miller, on this occasion, wrote a personal letter to all the Old Strip cowboys he could locate.” So was the beginning of the Cherokee Strip Cowpunchers’ Association.
